Emotion and the Framing of Risky Choice
One of the most noted phenomena in social and political decisionmaking is the occurrence of a framing effect. For example, on problems involving risky choices, individuals tend to act risk-averse when the problem is framed in terms of gains (e.g., saving lives, making money) and risk-seeking when the same problem is instead framed in terms of losses (e.g., deaths, losing money). Scholars have b...

This article is concernedwith howwemake decisions based on how problems are presented to us and the effect that the framing of the problem might have on our choices. Current philosophical and psychological accounts of the framing effect in experiments such as the Asian Disease Problem (ADP) concern reference points and domains (gains and losses). We question the importance of reference points an...
متن کاملFraming From Experience: Cognitive Processes and Predictions of Risky Choice
A framing bias shows risk aversion in problems framed as "gains" and risk seeking in problems framed as "losses," even when these are objectively equivalent and probabilities and outcomes values are explicitly provided. We test this framing bias in situations where decision makers rely on their own experience, sampling the problem's options (safe and risky) and seeing the outcomes before making...

We examined whether the classical framing effect observed with the Asian Disease problem could be reversed when people make decisions from experience. Ninety-five university students were randomly allocated to one of three conditions: Description, Sampling (where the participants were allowed to sample through the outcomes presented as a pack of cards) and Interactive (where the participants we...

This work investigates the intuitive and deliberative cognitive processes underlying risky decision-making by manipulating time pressure. A recent fMRI study by De Martino et al. (2006) found greater activation of the amygdala when exhibiting framing effects suggesting that they may be driven by System 1. Because this system is characterized as being fast, we expect more pronounced framing effe...
